David Barber

Growing up in Sydney, Australia, David Sensei was drawn to martial arts from an early age. At 14, he began studying kung fu in Sydney's Chinatown, which later inspired him to undertake regular research trips to China and enroll as a university student in Guangzhou. In 1992, David Sensei visited Japan for the first time and began his research into koryu bujutsu (classical samurai warrior traditions). He immigrated to Japan in 1995 and has lived in Kamakura for 30 years. He was a senior disciple of the late Sōke (Grandmaster) Satoshi Saito—a renowned figure who served as Chairman of the Nihon Kobudo Shinkokai (Japan Classical Martial Arts Promotion Association)—and is one of only three individuals to have been granted a Shihan license by him. For over two decades, he has dedicated himself to Yagyu Shingan Ryu (a school of armored combat from the early Edo period), Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Heiho (the swordsmanship famously mastered by the first three Tokugawa Shoguns, beginning with Tokugawa Ieyasu), and Negishi Ryu Shurikenjutsu (Japan's last surviving specialist school of samurai shuriken technique). David Sensei has also studied the Aikido methods of Gozo Shioda, which are still utilized today by the Tokyo Metropolitan Riot Police Squad (Kidōtai). Furthermore, he continues to make annual trips to China for ongoing training and research. Remaining deeply grateful and loyal to all his teachers both in Japan and abroad, David Sensei continues to refine his skills, embracing Budo as a lifelong path.
